Many elementary teachers begin the day with a “morning meeting” to build a sense of community and set a positive tone for the day. While this activity brings many social-emotional benefits, secondary teachers often find implementing the “morning meeting” challenging due to time and curriculum constraints. An easy-to-implement alternative is to invite students to share “good things” from their lives (Flippen Group, 2023) in a structured conversation.

1. Display the question visually
2. Request a signal that students can use to display readiness.
3. Provide a sentence stem encouraging students to speak in complete sentences.
4. Explain how students will share their responses with each other.
5. Assess whether the conversation achieved the desired results through a random system to call on students.
